How to Build a Cessna-Style Flight Simulator in Stages
A full cockpit is a big number all at once. It doesn't have to be. Here's the build order we recommend — what to buy first, what to defer, and how to make sure nothing you buy today gets thrown away tomorrow.
We get this question almost every week, and it's the right question to ask:
"Since the total cost can get quite high, I'd like to build it gradually. I'm thinking of starting with a basic panel with a G1000 setup, yoke, throttle/mixture, pedals, and then expanding. Do you have a recommended configuration that lets me build in stages while keeping everything compatible for future upgrades?"
Short answer: yes. Our whole product line is built as modules for exactly this reason. Longer answer below — including the one sequencing mistake that costs people real money.
How the system fits together
A home cockpit is really five independent systems, and they can be bought in any order:
- Avionics — the TNxi 8X units and audio panel. This is the heart of the sim and the part that determines what it feels like to fly.
- Flight controls — yoke, throttle quadrant, rudder pedals.
- Panel — what the avionics live in: metal stands to begin with, then a desktop panel or a full-size Cessna-style panel.
- Frame and seat — what you sit at: an ordinary desk and chair at first, an aluminum extrusion frame and GA seat later.
- Visuals and compute — the PC and the displays.
The critical design decision on our end: the avionics don't care what they're mounted in. The same TNxi units that sit in a pair of metal stands on your kitchen table today drop straight into a Flight Velocity desktop panel next year, and into a Flagship panel on an aluminum frame after that. You never re-buy the expensive part.
The one rule for a staged build
Buy the avionics first, and buy avionics that aren't locked to one aircraft. Most G1000 hardware commits you to a single panel in a single airplane. Build a 172 cockpit around it and that's the airplane you own from then on.
The TNxi 8X is the opposite. One set of hardware switches between G1000, G1000 NXi, G3X Touch, G600 TXi, GTN 750 and steam gauges — piston single or complex — from the Hub, with an optional touchscreen for the units that work that way in the real aircraft. That holds true at every stage. Fly a 172 today, a Bonanza tomorrow, and keep doing it after the panel and frame are built, because the panel is a shell and the avionics inside it are software-defined.
Everything else follows from that. The panel and frame depend on a decision you may not have made yet — shared desk or dedicated cockpit — so leave them until last. The avionics are the part that's right in every configuration.
Avionics, controls, and any table you already own
The TNxi 8X Suite with metal stands is the single best first purchase, because the stands mean you need no other structure at all. Set them on a desk, clamp a yoke to the edge, and you have a flyable IFR trainer that evening.
Add flight controls and pedals. Both are available as add-ons when you configure a suite or panel:

Use whatever PC you have. If it runs MSFS on a single monitor at a frame rate you're happy with, it will run this. You are flying real avionics with real knobs at this point — everything after Stage 1 is about immersion, not capability.
Honest note about the stands
If you go on to a full panel later, the metal stands are no longer needed — the panel holds the units directly. That's about $230 of the suite price that doesn't carry forward. We still recommend the stands for a staged build: they're what lets you fly for a year while you decide what you actually want, and most owners keep them for a second position or a portable setup. But if you already know a Flagship panel is coming within a couple of months, buy the suite as part of the panel configuration instead and skip the stands.
The PC
Upgrade the PC before you buy displays, not after. Three screens is roughly three times the pixels, and the machine has to be able to feed them before the extra screens are worth owning.
Budget $3,000 to $4,000 for a machine that will drive three displays and still have headroom in a few years. What to look for:

Buy it locally or build it yourself — we'd rather you spend the money on the right spec than on shipping a heavy box. The complete simulator ships with a machine at this tier already built, tested and configured against the panel.
Choose your panel
This is the decision the whole build hinges on, and it isn't about budget — it's about space. Ask one question: does this share a desk with the rest of your life, or does it get its own footprint?
Sharing a desk → Flight Velocity desktop panel
The Flight Velocity panels clamp to a normal desk, put a molded glareshield over your avionics, and come off again when you need the desk back. They're the natural Stage 3 for most people.

Dedicated space → Flagship panel
The Flagship Desktop Panel is a full-size Cessna-style panel: aluminum frame, molded glareshield, 105 × 43 × 19.5 cm. It's the real thing, and it's tall — on a standard 29" desk the glareshield sits above your sightline.
Two ways to solve the height: put it on our aluminum extrusion frame with a proper seat (Stage 5), or drop a table to roughly 22–24" so the panel sits at cockpit height. Plenty of customers have done the second with a cut-down desk and been very happy.
There's also the Flagship Panel — Premium Controls at $1,250, cut for premium yokes and quadrants. And this is the upgrade path worth knowing about: the metal frame stays, and switching between control ecosystems later means a new faceplate and a few brackets, not a new panel.
Displays
We don't sell monitors — shipping glass is expensive and you'll do better buying locally. We'll tell you exactly what to get. Budget around $1,200 for the screens, plus about $800 for a heavy-duty floor stand that can carry them:
- Desktop build: three 27" LCDs on a floor stand. Wraps nicely around a desk-mounted panel.
- Full cockpit: three 50" TVs, LCD or OLED, on a heavy-duty floor stand. This is what produces the "I can see the runway in my peripheral vision" effect.
Use a floor stand rather than desk mounts in both cases. It decouples the screens from the panel, so you can move or rebuild the cockpit without re-aligning the visuals.
Budget an evening or two here regardless of route. Three displays in a simulator aren't three desktop monitors: you're setting up multi-monitor rendering, getting the bezels and view angles right so the horizon runs true across all three, positioning the pop-out avionics windows, and mapping every axis and button across yoke, quadrant and pedals. It's all documented and we'll help — but it's the point where a lot of DIY builds stall.
Frame and seat
The last stage is the one that turns a desk into an aircraft: a flight-simulator-specific aluminum extrusion frame and a GA-style seat, with the panel, controls and pedals all rigidly located relative to each other at the correct geometry.
This is the one stage you can't assemble from parts. We don't sell the frame and seat separately — they're engineered around the Flagship panel and they come as part of the complete simulator. Nobody else builds them either, because the market is racing rigs, and a racing rig is the wrong shape for an airplane.
You can improvise here, and plenty of people do. A cut-down desk gets the panel to cockpit height. A sim-racing rig with extension brackets and an automotive seat will hold a yoke. Both work, after a fashion.
The racing-rig route is the one that catches people out, because it looks like it should fit. It doesn't, for two structural reasons. A race rig is built around a driver centred on the rig, and a pilot sits on the left — so the seat has to move off-centre and the whole frame goes asymmetric. And a full-size Cessna panel is 105 cm wide, far wider than any wheel deck, so the uprights need extending outward and bracing before they'll carry it without flexing every time you touch a knob. What starts as a $400 rig plus brackets turns into fabrication, and it still ends up with the yoke too low, the pedals too close and the seat reclined like a car instead of upright like an airplane.
Our frame starts from the airplane instead. Left-hand seating position, sized around the Flagship panel from the outset, with the yoke, pedals and panel at the distances they sit at in a real cockpit. It adds what you can't bolt on afterwards — caster wheels so it moves, integrated PC storage, real cable management, T-slot rails already sized for tactile transducers and speakers, and a GA-style seat at the right height and angle. Plan for roughly 8 ft × 6 ft of floor space.
So the staged path takes you all the way through Stage 4 on your own terms, and Stage 5 is where it converges on the complete simulator. Talk to us when you get here and we'll work out what the step up looks like from whatever you've already built.
Where the staged path ends up
The Multi-Profile Simulator Kit Premium is every stage above in one order at $14,000: flagship all-metal panel, TNxi 8X suite with touchscreen, force feedback yoke, customizable throttle quadrant, rudder pedals, GA-style seat, purpose-built extrusion frame, top-tier PC, heavy-duty display stand, and a remote configuration session once it's assembled. Deduct $3,500 if you already have a capable PC. Monitors aren't included — that's the ~$1,200 you'd spend locally.
Three things in that list you can't buy your way to piecemeal:
- The frame and seat. Not sold separately, and not something a racing rig becomes without fabrication.
- Force feedback yoke. Control forces that load up and go light with airspeed — the single biggest step in how the airplane feels.
- Remote configuration. Once it's assembled we connect to your machine and set the whole thing up: sim settings, multi-monitor rendering, avionics profiles in the Hub, every axis and button mapped, tested against your actual hardware. You fly it that day instead of spending two weekends on forums.
To be straight about what turns up: it ships as tested sub-assemblies with instructions, not fully assembled in one crate — a complete cockpit doesn't survive freight in one piece. What's different from a parts pile is that everything was built and tested together before it left us, the assembly is documented, and we're on a call with you afterwards to configure it. If your time is worth anything, that's where a lot of the difference sits.
It isn't finished when it ships
The extrusion frame exists so the simulator can keep growing. Every upgrade we develop is designed against this platform first, and mounts to the rails you already own:
- Premium audio. Studio-grade monitor speakers mounted directly to the frame, positioned for the seating position rather than wherever a desk allows.
- Haptics. An aviation-tuned tactile transducer system, so you feel engine vibration, gear, stall buffet and touchdown through the seat. Developed and tuned for flight rather than a generic racing shaker.
- FAA certification path. We're working toward a certified configuration for logging time. This is still in development and not confirmed — we won't promise a date, and you shouldn't buy on the assumption it lands. But it's being built against this frame.
- Whatever comes next. Avionics profiles arrive through Hub updates at no cost, and hardware modules mount to T-slot. Adding an iPad mount is a rail adapter, not a rebuild.
You also get us, and a warranty. Complete simulator owners have a direct line for configuration help, sim updates that change behaviour, and questions about what to add next — not a ticket queue. That's the line item nobody puts in a DIY spreadsheet, and it's the one that matters at 9pm when a sim update breaks something the night before you wanted to fly.

Stages 1 to 4 are genuinely yours to do at your own pace, and the parts carry forward whichever way you go. Stage 5 is where the two routes separate: fabricate it yourself over a few months of weekends, or step up to the complete simulator and skip that part. The DIY column gets close on parts cost — it's the time, the rework and the things that aren't sold separately that make up the difference.
Common questions
Can I really start with just the avionics?
Yes. The suite with metal stands is self-supporting on any desk or table. Add a clamp-on yoke and pedals and you have a complete, flyable IFR trainer with no panel at all.
Do I need a new PC to start?
No. If your current machine runs the sim acceptably on one screen, start there. The PC becomes the bottleneck at Stage 4, when you go to three displays.
Is the touchscreen option worth $200?
It's worth it if you plan to use TDS GTN 750/650 or the G600 TXi and G3X Touch profiles, where touch is how the real units work. If you fly G1000 NXi with knobs and buttons, the non-touch version loses nothing.
Will a Flight Velocity panel fit my desk?
The Pro 1 is 31" wide × 15⁹⁄₁₆" tall × 8½" deep and mounts to desktops up to 1⅜" thick. Measure your desk depth — you want the yoke clamped ahead of the panel with room for your hands.
If I buy a Flight Velocity panel now, is it wasted when I upgrade to a Flagship?
The panel itself is replaced — the avionics, controls, PC and displays all move over. Many owners keep the FV panel for a second station or resell it; they hold value well in the community.
How long do people usually take?
Most staged builds we see run 12 to 24 months, one stage every few months. There's no penalty for going slowly, and every stage is a complete, flyable configuration on its own.
